John Breiner of Palmerton Honored for Academic Achievement

John Breiner of Palmerton was among the 63 members of The University of Scranton's undergraduate class of 2014 honored for academic excellence, service or both at Class Night on May 30. Also recognized were the University's four Fulbright scholarship recipients for the 2014-2015 academic year. John Breiner was the recipient of the Excellence in Accounting Award and the Edward J. Spitzer Scholarship Award. He was also one of seven recipients of this year's Frank J. O'Hara Awards for General Academic Excellence. An accounting major with a minor in finance, Breiner was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and the business club and was named to "Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities." He also tutored students in intermediate and cost accounting. He is currently in the five year combined BS/MBA Program in Accounting. After finishing his degree, Breiner plans to work in the public sector as a CPA/CMA and eventually wish to pursue a Ph.D. in accounting. Breiner graduated from Palmerton Area High School in Palmerton. Bret Oplinger was the recipient of the Excellence in Computer Science Award. A computer science major, Oplinger was a member of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He plans to pursue his master's degree in software engineering at The University of Scranton. Oplinger graduated from Northampton Area High School in Northampton.
