The University of Scranton is a Catholic and Jesuit university animated by the spiritual vision and the tradition of excellence characteristic of the Society of Jesus.

For 21 consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Scranton among the 10 top Master’s Universities in the North. U.S. News has also ranked the University among America’s “up and coming” schools to watch, identifying Scranton among the nation’s universities making “the most promising and innovative changes in area of academics, faculty, student life, campus or facilities.” 

In addition, Scranton is among the select colleges in the U.S. earning Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. The Chronicle of Higher Education has also listed Scranton among the “top producers” of Fulbright awards for American students for ten consecutive years.

Founded in 1888, Scranton is a nationally respected comprehensive university located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Northeast region with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 undergraduate students and 1,500 graduate students. Scranton has earned accreditation from 17 accrediting agencies, including recognition by the nation’s most prestigious bodies in the fields of business and management, nursing, computer science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chemistry and counseling.

University of Scranton students are inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu

Forty-five University of Scranton students were inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society. Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society open to students and faculty in all disciplines of the University. Junior and senior students who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, loyalty and service are eligible for nomination by chapter members.

Students Inducted into the National Freshman Honor Society at The University of Scranton

The University of Scranton inducted 114 students into Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Honor Society for Freshmen, at a ceremony held on campus. For membership, students must rank in the top 20 percent of the class, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 for the first semester of their freshman year, and be enrolled on a full-time basis. The Richard H. Passon Chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta was founded in 2001 at Scranton.

Local Students Inducted into National Jesuit Honor Society at Scranton

Area residents were among the 42 University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national honor society for students in Jesuit colleges and universities, at a ceremony held recently on campus. The Scranton chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu was founded in 1943 and is the oldest honor society at The University of Scranton. Juniors, seniors and graduate students who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, loyalty and service are eligible for membership. Founded at the Jesuit university in 1982, this organization is for students who major or minor in business, have at least sophomore standing, and have a grade point average of 3.25. Several area residents were among The University of Scranton students inducted into Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology. Founded in 1931, this organization has chapters in 1,054 colleges and universities in all 50 states. The Jesuit university's chapter was installed in 1969. For membership, students must major or minor in psychology, ranking in the top 35th percentile of their class and maintain superior scholarship in psychology. Local Students Inducted into National Mathematics Honor Society

Several area residents were among The University of Scranton students inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the national honor society for mathematics. Inductees must be mathematics majors in their junior or senior year with an overall grade point average of 3.33 and a 3.50 average in mathematics. Biomathematics majors who meet the criteria can be nominated. The Jesuit university's chapter was installed in February 1973. The following area residents were inducted into the honor society.

Local Students Inducted into Beta Beta Beta Honor Society

Several local students were recently inducted into Beta Beta Beta, the national honor society for biology at The University of Scranton. The University's chapter was established in 1994. For membership, students must be a junior or senior with a 3.0 or higher grade point average in biology and have completed at least three biology courses, inlcuding one upper level course. Students must also be in good academic standing at the Jesuit university. The students inducted into the honor society at the Jesuit university are as follows:

Local Students Inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society at Scranton

Local residents were among The University of Scranton students inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the international honor society for computing and information disciplines founded in 1967. The Jesuit university's Gamma chapter was established in 1985. Upsilon Pi Epsilon recognizes academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate leves in computing and information disciplines and is endorsed by the professional organizations of the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE Computer Society. Several local students were recently inducted into Phi Lambda Upsilon, the national honor society for chemistry established in 1899. Scranton's chapter, Beta Kappa, was chartered in 1975 and recognizes students with 24 credits in chemistry who have achieved grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Jesuit university's chapter, Zeta Gamma, was chartered in May 2004 and recognizes exercise science majors in their junior year who have achieved an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0, and a 3.25 average in exercise science courses.
