The University of Scranton is a Catholic and Jesuit university animated by the spiritual vision and the tradition of excellence characteristic of the Society of Jesus.

“Best 377 Colleges,” “Best Buys in College Education,” “America’s Best Colleges,” “A Focus on Student Success” – these are just a few of the ways that the nation’s leading college rankings and guidebooks consistently refer to The University of Scranton.

For 21 consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Scranton among the 10 top Master’s Universities in the North. U.S. News has also ranked the University among America’s “up and coming” schools to watch, identifying Scranton among the nation’s universities making “the most promising and innovative changes in area of academics, faculty, student life, campus or facilities.” 

In addition, Scranton is among the select colleges in the U.S. earning Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. The Chronicle of Higher Education has also listed Scranton among the “top producers” of Fulbright awards for American students for ten consecutive years.

Founded in 1888, Scranton is a nationally respected comprehensive university located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Northeast region with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 undergraduate students and 1,500 graduate students. Scranton has earned accreditation from 17 accrediting agencies, including recognition by the nation’s most prestigious bodies in the fields of business and management, nursing, computer science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chemistry and counseling.

Marketing Honor Society Induction

University of Scranton students inducted into Mu Kappa Tao, the national honor society for marketing. The national honor society was founded in 1966 to recognize scholarship and high academic accomplishment among marketing students. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 2016.

Communication Honor Society Induction

University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Epsilon Alpha, the honor society for communication students. For induction into the honor society, students must excel in their general studies and especially in the field of communication, and have a grade point average of at least 3.5 or higher. The society was founded in 1980 by Fr. Joseph Hamernick, SJ.

University of Scranton students inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honor society. To be considered for induction, students must rank in the upper seven percent of the junior class, upper 10 percent of the senior class or upper 20 percent of the graduating master's class. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1997.

English Honor Society Induction

University of Scranton students inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, the national honor society in English. For induction into the honor society, students must be majors or minors in English, theatre or secondary education/English, have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in English, theatre and writing courses and have an overall grade point average of 3.4 or higher. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1980.

Computing and Information Honor Society Induction

University of Scranton students inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the only existing international honor society in the computing and information disciplines. Undergraduate requirements for induction into the honor society include junior academic standing, completion of 18 credits in computing sciences and a grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Graduate requirements for induction include completion of 15 credits in software engineering courses and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1985.

For induction into the honor society, students must be of junior academic standing, maintain an overall grade point average of 3.4 or higher, and have completed at least 21 credits in the disciplines of economics, human services, psychology, sociology, political science or history. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1971.

Eligibility for nomination requires a major or minor in philosophy as well as excellence in philosophy works. Induction of nominated students is based on voting results of philosophy faculty and current chapter members. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1982.

University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Phi Sigma, the national honor society for criminal justice students. For induction into the honor society, students must be a junior or senior having a criminal justice major or minor, complete at least four criminal justice courses, maintain a 3.2 grade point average overall as well as in criminal justice, and have a standing in the top 35 percent of the class. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1982.

Biology Honor Society Induction

University of Scranton students inducted into Beta Beta Beta, the national honor society for biology. For induction into the honor society, students must have completed at least three biology courses, maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average in biology, and be in good academic standing at the University. The honor society encourages undergraduate biological research through presentations at conventions, publication in the journal BIOS, and research/travel grants. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1994.

For induction into the honor society, students must have completed one half of the nursing curriculum, demonstrated ability in nursing, have a grade point average of 3.0 and rank in the upper one-third of the class. To be considered for induction, students must be in their junior or senior year, have an overall grade point average of 3.33 and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in mathematics. Eligible biomathematics majors can be nominated with an unsolicited recommendation from full-time mathematics faculty. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1973.
