The University of Scranton is a Catholic and Jesuit university animated by the spiritual vision and the tradition of excellence characteristic of the Society of Jesus.

“Best 377 Colleges,” “Best Buys in College Education,” “America’s Best Colleges,” “A Focus on Student Success” – these are just a few of the ways that the nation’s leading college rankings and guidebooks consistently refer to The University of Scranton.

For 21 consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Scranton among the 10 top Master’s Universities in the North. U.S. News has also ranked the University among America’s “up and coming” schools to watch, identifying Scranton among the nation’s universities making “the most promising and innovative changes in area of academics, faculty, student life, campus or facilities.” 

In addition, Scranton is among the select colleges in the U.S. earning Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. The Chronicle of Higher Education has also listed Scranton among the “top producers” of Fulbright awards for American students for ten consecutive years.

Founded in 1888, Scranton is a nationally respected comprehensive university located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Northeast region with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 undergraduate students and 1,500 graduate students. Scranton has earned accreditation from 17 accrediting agencies, including recognition by the nation’s most prestigious bodies in the fields of business and management, nursing, computer science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chemistry and counseling.

Maguire Scholars

Maguire scholarships are funded by The Maguire Foundation, founded by philanthropists James J. and Frances Maguire. The scholarship program provides graduates selected from 41 Philadelphia-area high schools (many of which are Catholic schools) with "last-dollar" financial support for four years of college at one of 28 partner institutions. Scranton has been a partner school since 2015.

Michael Spadavecchia, Moonachie, New Jersey, received one of only four scholarships awarded in 2018 by Sigma Nu Tau, the national honor society for entrepreneurship. A senior majoring in entrepreneurship at The University of Scranton, Spadavecchia was among just four students in the country selected to receive a $1,250 scholarship awarded by the honor society in 2018.

Sara Wierbowski of Owego, was among The University of Scranton full-tuition class of 2019 Presidential Scholars who attended The President's Business Council (PBC) 17th Annual Award Dinner for which the proceeds from the more than $1 million raised will support the University's Presidential Scholarship Endowment Fund. More than 500 guests attended the dinner at The Pierre Hotel in New York City on Oct. 4 which honored Scranton graduate Linda McGowan, partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), and Joseph Sorbera Jr., president of JLS Cost Management Systems Inc., with Jesuit school's President's Medal.

Goldwater Scholar is Model Scientist of the Future

University of Scranton junior Matthew Reynolds, a biology and biophysics double major and member of the University's Honors Program, was awarded a highly-selective Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, which is the nation's premier undergraduate scholarship for the fields of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. Reynolds, of Apalachin, New York, was among just 240 students from 157 colleges in the nation to earn Goldwater Scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year.
