University of Scranton students inducted into Chi Delta Rho, the University's chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for counseling. The international honor society was established in 1985 to recognize outstanding achievement and service within the profession of counseling. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1994.

Thirty-five members of The University of Scranton's class of 2018 to graduate from its Special Jesuit Liberal Arts Honors Program (SJLA), which is one of Scranton's programs of excellence. Students in SJLA pursue a rigorous education designed to develop enhanced writing, oral and critical-thinking skills through specially designed courses in philosophy, theology and literature.

Ten members of The University of Scranton's class of 2018 were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during a ceremony held on campus in May.

For University of Scranton Fulbright Student Lauren Coggins the case is clear: Mother knows best. When Coggins was an eighth-grade student at Abington Heights Middle School, her mother Patricia told her to take Spanish for her foreign language choice of the classes offered at her school "because it's the second most commonly-spoken language in the United States and it will help you in your future."

The University of Scranton conferred nearly 600 master's and doctoral degrees at its graduate commencement ceremony on May 26 in the Byron Recreation Complex. Graduates recognized at the ceremony include those who completed their degree requirements in August and December of 2017, as well as January and May of 2018.

Fifteen members of The University of Scranton's class of 2018 graduated from its Business Leadership Honors Program, which is one of Scranton's programs of excellence. Students in this highly-selective program explore the basic theories and concepts of leadership through special seminars and courses in management, ethics, strategy and analysis, in addition to field trips to learn from top executives and projects in leadership, service and mentoring.

The University of Scranton conferred more than 890 bachelor's and associate's degrees at its undergraduate commencement on May 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre. Very Reverend Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J., president of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, read the remarks of the principal speaker Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person because he is undergoing treatment for a form of acute leukemia. Both Father Kesicki and Bishop Murry, in absentia, received honorary degrees from the University. Honorary degrees were also presented to Sister Ann Walsh, I.H.M., former CEO and current assistant director of Friends of the Poor; William Whitaker, founding president of the Washington Jesuit Academy, Washington. D.C.; and Cecelia Lynett Haggerty, Times-Shamrock Communications and former University trustee.

Exercise science majors led demonstrations of hands-on demonstrations of sophisticated biomechanical measurement equipment for high school students from Wyoming Valley West as part of National Biomechanics Day at The University of Scranton.

The event featured 17-year-old driver Todd Gilliland, who is among the nine-member Class of 2017-18 up-and-coming drivers featured in NASCAR NEXT. The event included meeting with communication students for a discussion about social media and sports and a timed "tire change pit drill" for students, faculty and staff at the base of the commons on campus.

University of Scranton students inducted into Upsilon Phi Delta, the national honor society for graduate and undergraduate students in healthcare administration programs. Students must have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.5 for induction. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 2002.

University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society. Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society open to students and faculty in all disciplines of the University.

Ryan Kiess, Manhasset, New York, won The University of Scranton Programming Board (USPB) annual Tuition Raffle. Kiess, a graduate of Manhasset High School, is a member of Scranton's Class of 2018. He is an accounting major in the Kania School of Management. On campus, he has been involved with the Beta Alpha Psi club and also played on the University's lacrosse team for 3 years.

University of Scranton students inducted into Mu Kappa Tao, the national honor society for marketing. The national honor society was founded in 1966 to recognize scholarship and high academic accomplishment among marketing students. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 2016.

University of Scranton students inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society for communication majors. The national honor society was founded in 1985 to encourage high levels of scholarship and leadership in the field of communications. The University's chapter was established in 1999.

University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Epsilon Alpha, the honor society for communication students. For induction into the honor society, students must excel in their general studies and especially in the field of communication, and have a grade point average of at least 3.5 or higher. The society was founded in 1980 by Fr. Joseph Hamernick, SJ.

University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Delta Sigma, the national honor society sponsored by the American Advertising Federation that recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement in advertising studies.

University of Scranton students inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honor society. To be considered for induction, students must rank in the upper seven percent of the junior class, upper 10 percent of the senior class or upper 20 percent of the graduating master's class. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1997.

University of Scranton students inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, the national honor society in English. For induction into the honor society, students must be majors or minors in English, theatre or secondary education/English, have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in English, theatre and writing courses and have an overall grade point average of 3.4 or higher. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1980.

University of Scranton students inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the only existing international honor society in the computing and information disciplines. Undergraduate requirements for induction into the honor society include junior academic standing, completion of 18 credits in computing sciences and a grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Graduate requirements for induction include completion of 15 credits in software engineering courses and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1985.

University of Scranton students inducted into Pi Gamma Mu, the international honor society in social science. For induction into the honor society, students must be of junior academic standing, maintain an overall grade point average of 3.4 or higher, and have completed at least 21 credits in the disciplines of economics, human services, psychology, sociology, political science or history. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1971.

University of Scranton students inducted into Phi Sigma Tau, the international honor society for students of philosophy. Eligibility for nomination requires a major or minor in philosophy as well as excellence in philosophy works. Induction of nominated students is based on voting results of philosophy faculty and current chapter members. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1982.

University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Phi Sigma, the national honor society for criminal justice students. For induction into the honor society, students must be a junior or senior having a criminal justice major or minor, complete at least four criminal justice courses, maintain a 3.2 grade point average overall as well as in criminal justice, and have a standing in the top 35 percent of the class. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1982.
