For 21 consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Scranton among the 10 top Master’s Universities in the North. U.S. News has also ranked the University among America’s “up and coming” schools to watch, identifying Scranton among the nation’s universities making “the most promising and innovative changes in area of academics, faculty, student life, campus or facilities.” 

In addition, Scranton is among the select colleges in the U.S. earning Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. The Chronicle of Higher Education has also listed Scranton among the “top producers” of Fulbright awards for American students for ten consecutive years.

Founded in 1888, Scranton is a nationally respected comprehensive university located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Northeast region with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 undergraduate students and 1,500 graduate students. Seven undergraduate students granted Fellowships for Summer Research in 2018. The fellowships, administered by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, offer each student the chance to partner with a faculty mentor to complete a research project during the summer. Each project was proposed and designed by the student and their faculty mentor.

Eleven University of Scranton students selected from a competitive pool to receive a stipend of up to $4,000 to ease the burden of accepting a meaningful unpaid scholarship. Accounting Honor Society Induction

University of Scranton students inducted into the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Honor Society. This organization recognizes students for academic achievement in the study of accounting who major in accounting, finance or information technology, have achieved junior status or higher in their undergraduate studies, have taken three or more accounting courses, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher overall as well as in their accounting courses, among other criteria.

Counseling Honor Society Induction

University of Scranton students inducted into Chi Delta Rho, the University's chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for counseling. The international honor society was established in 1985 to recognize outstanding achievement and service within the profession of counseling. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1994.

For University of Scranton Fulbright Student Lauren Coggins the case is clear: Mother knows best. When Coggins was an eighth-grade student at Abington Heights Middle School, her mother Patricia told her to take Spanish for her foreign language choice of the classes offered at her school "because it's the second most commonly-spoken language in the United States and it will help you in your future."

Business Leadership Honors Program

Fifteen members of The University of Scranton's class of 2018 graduated from its Business Leadership Honors Program, which is one of Scranton's programs of excellence. Students in this highly-selective program explore the basic theories and concepts of leadership through special seminars and courses in management, ethics, strategy and analysis, in addition to field trips to learn from top executives and projects in leadership, service and mentoring.

University of Scranton Confers Master's and Doctoral Degrees

The University of Scranton conferred nearly 600 master's and doctoral degrees at its graduate commencement ceremony on May 26 in the Byron Recreation Complex. Graduates recognized at the ceremony include those who completed their degree requirements in August and December of 2017, as well as January and May of 2018.

University of Scranton Undergraduate Commencement

The University of Scranton conferred more than 890 bachelor's and associate's degrees at its undergraduate commencement on May 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre. Very Reverend Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J., president of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, read the remarks of the principal speaker Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person because he is undergoing treatment for a form of acute leukemia. Both Father Kesicki and Bishop Murry, in absentia, received honorary degrees from the University. Honorary degrees were also presented to Sister Ann Walsh, I.H.M., former CEO and current assistant director of Friends of the Poor; William Whitaker, founding president of the Washington Jesuit Academy, Washington. D.C.; and Cecelia Lynett Haggerty, Times-Shamrock Communications and former University trustee.

The event included meeting with communication students for a discussion about social media and sports and a timed "tire change pit drill" for students, faculty and staff at the base of the commons on campus.

Students must have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.5 for induction. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 2002.

Tuition Raffle at Scranton

Ryan Kiess, Manhasset, New York, won The University of Scranton Programming Board (USPB) annual Tuition Raffle. Kiess, a graduate of Manhasset High School, is a member of Scranton's Class of 2018. He is an accounting major in the Kania School of Management. On campus, he has been involved with the Beta Alpha Psi club and also played on the University's lacrosse team for 3 years.
