The University of Scranton's 2017 student advertising team competed against students from colleges in Pennsylvania, New York and Washington, D.C., in the District 2 National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). The district competition took place in April in New York City.

University of Scranton junior Matthew Reynolds, a biology and biophysics double major and member of the University's Honors Program, was awarded a highly-selective Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, which is the nation's premier undergraduate scholarship for the fields of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. Reynolds, of Apalachin, New York, was among just 240 students from 157 colleges in the nation to earn Goldwater Scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year.

University of Scranton students took first, second and third place awards in competitions at the 2017 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 2 Student Activities Conference, which was held in the spring semester at Rowan University in New Jersey. Twenty-five Scranton students participated in contests that included robotics, physics, design and student paper and ethics competitions, as well as leadership training.

Ten University of Scranton students, five faculty members, and one alumna presented research projects and led workshop sessions at the Eastern Psychological Association annual meeting held in March in Boston.

Students were among 45 University of Scranton students who participated in six domestic service trips organized by Campus Ministries' Center for Service and Social Justice.

Twenty-four University of Scranton education majors are serving as student teachers during the spring semester at 13 schools, which include Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit 19 and the following nine school districts: Bear Creek, Blue Ridge, Dunmore, Mid Valley, North Pocono, Scranton, Valley View, Wallenpaupack and Wyoming Seminary.

University of Scranton students and their high school teachers, who they credit for contributing to their success, recognized with Rose Kelly Awards at a ceremony held recently on campus.

Students receive The University of Scranton's Frank O'Hara medal, which were given to the first-, second- and third-year Scranton students with the highest grade-point averages in the Kania School of Management, the Panuska College of Professional Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences for the 2015-16 academic year. The awards, named in honor of the late Frank O'Hara who served the University for 53 years in various administrative positions.

Sophomore guard Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) took the game over late on Saturday at Rochester, as the guard lifted the fifth-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team to the 2016 Chuck Resler Invitational Championship in a four-point victory. For her efforts over the weekend in a pair of victories for the Lady Royals, Mann has been named the University of Scranton Athlete of the Week for the period ending Nov. 20, 2016.

Casey has been named second-team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the highest honor recognizing student-athletes for their athletic and academic accomplishments.

Senior Jimmy Buckley (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Xavier) had a standout season for The University of Scranton men's cross country team. As it turns out, he's no slouch in the classroom, either. On Tuesday, Buckley was named the Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athlete for men's cross country, an honor that recognizes a senior in each sport who has excelled both athletically and academically.

Tyler Milewski of Jefferson Township, a graduate student at The University of Scranton, received the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) Travel Award to present her research at the annual Society for Neuroscience meeting in November.

University of Scranton sophomore computer science major Joshua David of Scranton won the grand prize in the general computing category of the 2016 APL problem-solving competition. In addition to winning a $2,000 cash prize, David presented his solutions at the Dyalog APL User Meeting in Glasgow, Scotland.

Senior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) became the second wrestler in University of Scranton history to reach 100 career wins when he went 4-0 at the Electric City Duals on Saturday in the Long Center. As a result of his historic achievement, Evans has been named the University's Athlete of the Week.

Junior Connor Casey (Hatfield, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) of The University of Scranton men's soccer team had a huge week for the Royals, as Scranton captured their second straight Landmark Conference Championship with a pair of wins over Drew and Elizabethtown in tournament play. With two goals in two matches, Casey has been named the University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.

Sophomore Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) finished off an historic 2016 regular season this past week, leading a Scranton attack that went 4-0 on the week. For her efforts, Kirwan was named the Landmark Conference's Volleyball Athlete of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced. For Kirwan, this marks the third time on her career that she has won the award, and the first time she has won the award during the 2016 season.
