The University of Scranton is a Catholic and Jesuit university animated by the spiritual vision and the tradition of excellence characteristic of the Society of Jesus.

“Best 377 Colleges,” “Best Buys in College Education,” “America’s Best Colleges,” “A Focus on Student Success” – these are just a few of the ways that the nation’s leading college rankings and guidebooks consistently refer to The University of Scranton.

For 21 consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Scranton among the 10 top Master’s Universities in the North. U.S. News has also ranked the University among America’s “up and coming” schools to watch, identifying Scranton among the nation’s universities making “the most promising and innovative changes in area of academics, faculty, student life, campus or facilities.” 

In addition, Scranton is among the select colleges in the U.S. earning Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. The Chronicle of Higher Education has also listed Scranton among the “top producers” of Fulbright awards for American students for ten consecutive years.

Founded in 1888, Scranton is a nationally respected comprehensive university located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Northeast region with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 undergraduate students and 1,500 graduate students. Scranton has earned accreditation from 17 accrediting agencies, including recognition by the nation’s most prestigious bodies in the fields of business and management, nursing, computer science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chemistry and counseling.

Whalen Nabs Landmark Conference Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week Honors

Sophomore Christopher Whalen (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) of the University of Scranton men's swimming & diving team opened his career as a Royal in a big way on Saturday in a dual meet against Cabrini and FDU-Florham, leading Scranton to two victories in their 2016-17 season opener. For his performance in the meet, Whalen has been named the Landmark Conference's men's swimming Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 16, the conference office announced on Monday.

Sommers Takes Landmark Conference Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week Honors

Senior Emma Sommers (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) had a big day in Scranton's 2016-17 season opening victories at Cabrini on Saturday, pacing the team to victories over the host Cavaliers and FDU-Florham. For her efforts in the meet, Sommers has been named the Landmark Conference's Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced this afternoon. For Sommers, this marks the first time in her career at Scranton that she has earned the award from the Landmark.

Brittany Cafiero Named University of Scranton Athlete of the Week

Senior Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) lent more than a helping hand as The University of Scranton women's volleyball team clinched a playoff berth with a pair of victories on Friday. Cafiero totaled 57 assists and 17 digs as the Royals secured their spot in the Landmark Conference postseason with wins over Elizabethtown and Moravian. For her efforts, Cafiero has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.

The University of Scranton granted seven undergraduate students President's Fellowships for Summer Research in 2016. The fellowships, administered by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, offer each student the chance to partner with a faculty mentor to complete a research project during the summer. Each project was proposed and designed by the student and their faculty mentor.

Sophomore Brittany Uricchio (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was in the mood to lend a helping hand last week. The midfielder assisted on three of the Royals' goals and added one herself while helping the team win twice to extend its winning streak to six. As a result of her big week, Uricchio has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.

The national conference, held at a different Jesuit University each summer, entails group discussions, a day of service and various workshops focused on furthering the development of students' leadership from a Jesuit perspective.
